How much chemical goes in my tank?

This is already filled in with 1 gallon per 1,000 sq ft, which is what most lawn sprays use — about 40 mL per square metre, or 3.785 litres per 1,000 sq ft. Leave it as it is unless the label on your bottle states its own spray volume. It is here because the amount for one tank cannot be worked out without it, and it never blocks the answer above.

Optional — where you are, and who is spraying

The rates on this page are published label rates of US EPA-registered products. A US registration is not a Canadian or Australian registration, and commercial application is regulated differently from spraying your own ground. This control adds a note about that. It never hides a product, never removes a rate and never changes the arithmetic.

A worked example, so you can check the tool.

These are the values the page starts with: Surge Broadleaf Herbicide for Turf, 5,000 sq ft, a 2-gallon tank, and the water field left at its default of 1 gallon per 1,000 sq ft. The answer on screen is this one until you change a field.

  1. Product for the job. The source prints 1.2 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft for this product. 5,000 sq ft is five thousand-square-foot units, so 1.2 × 5 = 6 fl oz. That is 177.4 mL.
  2. Water for the job. 1 gallon per 1,000 sq ft × 5 = 5 gallons. That is 18.93 litres.
  3. Tank loads. 5 gallons ÷ 2 gallons = 2.5 tank loads: two full tanks plus a 1-gallon part load.
  4. Product in one full tank. 6 fl oz ÷ 2.5 tank loads = 2.4 fl oz in each full 2-gallon tank. The part load takes 1.2 fl oz in 1 gallon, which is the same proportion.
  5. Area one full tank covers. 2 gallons ÷ 1 gallon per 1,000 sq ft = 2,000 sq ft per tankload.
  6. In metric. Enter 464.5 m² instead of 5,000 sq ft and the same arithmetic applies: the product is unchanged at 177.4 mL, and the water is 18.93 litres. The rate itself stays at 1.2 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft, because that is what the label prints.

Notice what did not happen: nothing was multiplied up for the weather, the weeds or the season, and nothing was added to the rate. 6 fl oz over 5,000 sq ft is exactly the published rate applied to that area.

The arithmetic, in full.

There is no hidden step. This is every equation the tool contains, and the constants it uses.

1. Product for the area

Product = label rate × area. If the rate is per 1,000 sq ft: 1.2 fl oz per 1,000 sq ft over 5,000 sq ft = 1.2 × 5 = 6 fl oz. If the rate is per acre: 7 pt per acre over 2 acres = 14 pt. Both are the same statement in different units, and the tool keeps the rate in the unit the source printed, so the amount comes out in that unit too. The rate is never converted into another unit and shown as a label rate, and it is never adjusted.

2. Water for the area

Water = water per 1,000 sq ft × area. One gallon per 1,000 sq ft over 5,000 sq ft = 5 gallons. The pre-filled value of 1 gallon per 1,000 sq ft is typical for lawn spraying, and it is about 40 mL per square metre, or 3.785 litres per 1,000 sq ft. Your own label may state a different spray volume, and if it does, use your label's figure in the optional field. The water number never changes the label rate: it changes how much solution carries the product, so it changes the number of tankloads and the amount that goes into each one — not how much product the area needs.

3. Tankloads and the amount per tank

Tankloads = water ÷ tank size. 5 gallons ÷ 2 gallons = 2.5 tankloads. Product in one full tank = product ÷ tankloads: 6 fl oz ÷ 2.5 = 2.4 fl oz. That is exactly the same proportion as the water — a full tank holds 2 of the 5 gallons, so it holds 2 ÷ 5 of the product. A final part load takes its own share, and the tool states that share rather than rounding the product up, because rounding a rate up is the thing this page exists to refuse. Area one tank covers = tank size ÷ water per 1,000 sq ft: 2 gallons ÷ 1 gallon per 1,000 sq ft = 2,000 sq ft.

4. Units

You enter area in sq ft, acres, m² or hectares, and the tank in gallons or litres. Internally the tool converts to square feet and millilitres with exact factors: 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft, 1 m² = 10.763910416709722 sq ft, 1 hectare = 10,000 m², 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 litres, 1 US fluid ounce = 29.5735295625 mL, 1 ounce (weight) = 28.349523125 g. Those conversions exist so you can use the units you have, and so the same amount can be shown in the other common unit beside the answer. They are not a rate conversion: the label's own unit is always the primary figure.

5. What the tool will not do

It does not increase a rate — not for heat, not for heavy weeds, not for brush, not for anything, and there is no input that could. Several of the labels in the sources say do not apply when the air temperature is above 90 °F, so the answer for hot conditions is the label's answer: do not apply. It does not choose a rate for you, does not combine products, and gives no tank-mix recipe, no mix order and no compatibility advice. It does not tell you that a use is registered where you live. One product, one rate, one area, and the label on the bottle decides.

Checking your sprayer (only if you want to)

You do not need any of this to use the tool. The pre-filled water figure is a sensible default that most lawn labels sit close to. If you would rather use your own sprayer's real output, here is how to measure it, and here is what it changes.

The 1/128-acre method

Mark out a rectangle 18.5 ft × 18.5 ft, which is 340 sq ft — one 128th of an acre. Fill the tank with water only. Spray the marked area at the speed, pressure and nozzle height you will actually use, keeping the nozzle on. Measure how much water it takes to refill the tank to the same mark. That figure in gallons is your application rate in gallons per acre directly, because you sprayed exactly 1/128 of an acre: 1 gallon used = 128 gallons per acre. Converting to gallons per 1,000 sq ft

The tool's water field is per 1,000 sq ft, so divide your gallons per acre by 43.56: gal per 1,000 sq ft = GPA ÷ 43.56. That divisor is just arithmetic — 43,560 sq ft in an acre ÷ 1,000 = 43.56. The formula method and that divisor are published by Pesticide Environmental Stewardship. Worked: 44 gal per acre ÷ 43.56 = 1.01 gal per 1,000 sq ft. In metric, 1 gallon per 1,000 sq ft is the same spray volume as 40.7 mL per square metre, or 3.785 L per 92.9 m².

What a wrong water figure does and does not change

It does not change the label rate, and it does not change how much product your area needs: that is rate × area, and nothing else. It changes how much water that product goes into, so it changes the number of tankloads and the amount in each one. If you enter a much higher water figure than you really spray, the job will look like more tankloads than it needs, and each tank will be told to carry less product than it should for that volume. That is why the field is there, and why your own measurement beats a default when the label states a spray volume of its own.

Professional detail

Carrier volume, spray pressure, nozzle selection, droplet size, drift management and the order in which a tank is filled are all label and equipment matters. This tool publishes no mix order and no tank-mix recipe, and it publishes no personal protective equipment, re-entry interval or buffer zone values, because those are read off the label of the product in your hand. The rate reference below records the restrictions the cited sources do give — temperature limits, application intervals, reseeding and mowing windows, turf species limits, and buffer and clippings rules.

How much chemical do I put in my tank?
Pick the product, enter the area you are spraying and the size of your tank. The tool takes the label rate published for that product, multiplies it by your area to get the product for the whole job, multiplies the water you spray per 1,000 sq ft by the same area to get the water, and divides the product by the number of tank loads to give what goes into one tank. The answer is shown as an amount of product and an amount of water, with the arithmetic in one line underneath so you can check it.
Where does the label rate come from, and can the tool change it?
Every rate is quoted from a named source — the PNW Weed Management Handbook or the UC Statewide IPM Program turfgrass table — and the source is shown under the product, in the reference table and in the sources list. Where a source prints a range, the tool uses the lowest figure and says so. It never increases a rate: there is no heat factor, no weed-density factor and no brush factor, and no field to enter one. Applying above the labelled rate is a violation of federal law.
Why does it ask for the water I spray per 1,000 sq ft?
Because a label rate is a product amount per area at a stated water volume, so product per tank cannot be worked out without it. The field is already filled in with 1 gallon per 1,000 sq ft, which is what most lawn sprays use, and that is about 40 millilitres per square metre. Leave it alone unless your label says otherwise. It is optional and it never blocks the answer.
Does the tool increase the rate for hot weather, heavy weeds or brush?
No, never. Multiplying a label rate up is illegal, whatever the conditions. The labels in the sources say do not apply when the air temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, so the correct answer for heat is not to spray, not to spray harder. This tool has no condition input, no severity input and no brush mode, and it cannot compute a figure above the published rate.
Can it combine two products, or tell me a mix order?
No. It takes one product, one rate and one area at a time. It gives no tank-mix recipe, no mix order and no compatibility advice, because that is label content for the products involved and, where the labels are silent, a question for the manufacturer.
Does it work in metric?
Yes. Enter the area in square metres or hectares and the tank in litres, and the arithmetic is done correctly in those units. The label rate stays in the unit the label printed, because that is the label rate, and the amount of product is shown in both units — fluid ounces with millilitres, or ounces with grams — so both are usable. A US rate is never converted and presented as another country's label rate.
What if the rate on my bottle is different from the one shown?
Then your bottle is right and this page is wrong. The rates here are quoted from two university extension sources and the tool uses the lowest figure the source prints for the product. Your own label governs: if it differs, follow the bottle and do not use this page's figure.
Why is there a question about where I am and who is spraying?
Because the rates here are published label rates of US EPA-registered products, and a US registration is not a Canadian or Australian registration. The question is optional. It adds a note explaining that, and it never hides a product, never removes a rate and never changes the arithmetic.
Do I need a licence to spray these products, and is this free?
Applying a pesticide for payment is commercial application, and many states and provinces require certification to use any pesticide commercially, not only restricted-use products.
